The Japanese version of "Because" by Sophie Calle, a contemporary French female artist garnering attention from around the world, is finally available!
Because I'm fascinated by the baby.
The mother told passers-by
"But you haven't seen the picture of this girl!" he cried.
Because I read that story
When Sophie Calle published her series "Parce que" (Because) in 2018, the books "Parce que" and "Because" were published in both French and English.
The work exhibited in the gallery has a frame covered with cloth embroidered with text beginning with "because." After reading the text, viewers are able to flip the cloth over to face the photograph underneath, superimposing the images they receive from the words onto the photograph.
In the book, just like in the artwork, the reader first reads the words and then explores the images by taking out the photographs themselves, a structure expressed in the form of a book.
An experimental collection that allows you to re-experience Sophie Calle's work in book form.
At the request of Sophie Calle herself, this is the first Japanese edition to be published. It contains the same content as the new French and English editions, and includes six new works. Supervised by modern and contemporary art curator Aomi Okabe, the world of Sophie Calle's work is presented in beautiful Japanese.
