About the productJapanese

This is a photo book by Arto Saari, a professional skater who has been active for many years, including being selected as "Skater of the Year" by THRASHER magazine in 2001, and who is also recognized for his talent as a photographer. After taking up surfing seven years ago, he moved his base of operations to the North Shore of Oahu, and now captures everyday moments with his own unique compositions, using surfers who visit the area from all over the world, including world champion JohnJohn Florence, who is originally from Hawaii.

"After 20 years of skateboarding, my body was broken. I was no longer physically able to skateboard. It was a harsh reality for me to come to terms with and question: What next? Would I ever learn to live and love again?

There was a void in my soul.

Photography helped me mask that for a few years, but it wasn't until I started surfing that I was able to fully let go of the notion that I'd never be able to skate again.

But I had fallen in love again.

After moving to Hawaii seven years ago, I found myself wandering. A new question: Had I lost my passion for photography? Some might call it a midlife crisis, but in retrospect I think I was having more of a midlife crisis.

I spent most of my time learning how to surf and what boards to ride, and you could find me on Bike Path whether I was taking my kids to school, checking out the waves, or going surfing.

Before long, I was witnessing the beautiful everyday moments that happened on the Bike Path, and every time I looked at my photos, I regretted not having my camera with me.

Eventually I woke up and started capturing surfing action, participating in this beautiful watery world and capturing everyday moments of people going about their lives.

My photography passions have always consisted of landscapes, portraits and action, and the North Shore Bike Path embodies it all for me.

I want to thank you for helping me fall deeper in love with photography and life.

This photo book is dedicated to Mimi, Ella, Ragnar and the community of the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.

Special thanks to Florence Ohana for making these photos possible.

I'll be grateful!
Thank you! "Alto
