About the productJapanese

A collection of works by Helkie-based artist Kumi Oguro. This is her latest work, published 13 years after "NOISE" in 2008.

The following is an excerpt from the website of Nakameguro gallery POETIC SCAPE, where he held a solo exhibition in 2021.

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
POETIC SCAPE will be holding "HESTER", a solo exhibition by Helkie-based artist Kumi Oguro, from October 20th to November 20th, 2021. This will be POETIC SCAPE's first solo exhibition in about nine and a half years since "Play" in 2012.

Oguro once described his own work as "like playing with dolls using living people." The "playing with dolls" that Oguro speaks of does not mean setting up an imaginary story or setting the stage and using dolls as characters, but rather gives the impression of a more flexible act of placing human-like objects in various places and bending their joints.

Oguro intuitively places people in space and manipulates the hose, depending on a certain context. The tension that arises between the body and the space, and the power that emanates from the body itself, create a sense of unreality within reality, which is finally fixed in the image of a photograph.

Oguro's works sometimes seem fantastical or like fragments of a dream, but what we actually see may represent the mysterious nature of "the creature called human being" (Oguro) that actually exists in reality.

This exhibition will feature 15 works from Kumi Oguro's new artist book "HESTER" (Stockmans Art Books), her first publication in 13 years. Please look forward to it.
