Sandwich, a creative platform run by Japanese sculptor Kohei Nawa, began its activities in 2009 in Fushimi, Kyoto, based in a renovated sandwich manufacturing factory.
This was not only a studio/office where staff who produced works and carried out projects gathered, but also a laboratory for experimenting with the possibilities of materials, a factory for developing the necessary equipment and tools, a hub connecting various workshops involved in the production process, a practical education system connecting students with art sites, and a residence for artists and guests from Japan and abroad.
Just as Nawa's field of activity goes far beyond that of a typical sculptor, spanning the fields of architecture, interior design, stage art, design, fashion and dance performance, "Sandwich" is constantly stimulated by the flow of countless things, events and people, and continues to grow and proliferate.
Located in a rural setting away from the urban area of Kyoto, with the Uji River flowing gently nearby, Kohei Nawa and "Sandwich" have produced countless works of art here.
It is impossible to cover all of their activities in one volume, but it may be possible to convey a glimpse of the dense time and atmosphere that flows for their creation. What is described and recorded in this book is a fragment of the activities that "Sandwich" has done beyond the realm of contemporary art, and has influenced people, cities, society, and even the world.
The book features contributions from Brett Littman, a New York-based museum director, writer, and curator who is a longtime friend of Nawa and knows "Sandwich" well; Osaka Koichiro, a Japanese independent curator and writer; and Prabda Yoon, a Thailand-based artist who writes and works in a variety of media. It also includes an interview with Damien Jalet, a French-Belgian choreographer/dancer with whom Nawa has collaborated for nearly 10 years.
The words, which were woven together thanks to the friendship that has been cultivated between the artist and the four other artists, touch upon personal aspects while also unraveling the true essence of the artist and Sandwich as objects.
The book also provides an overview of the evolution of Sandwich's activities over the 14 years since 2009, and covers previously unarticulated aspects such as the influence that the artist and Sandwich have had on the art scene, as well as its uniqueness both domestically and internationally.
The sun rises, the moon rises, and the sun rises again.
Sandwich's activities are scattered throughout every moment of this monotonous repetition.
If we were to gather them all together and look at them, what kind of day would unfold?
