A complete reprint of the legendary photo magazine "Provoke," first published in 1968.
This is a complete reprint of the legendary photo magazine "Provoke," which was launched in 1968 by a group of artists including Taki Koji, Nakahira Takuma, Takanashi Yutaka, Okada Takahiko, and (later Moriyama Daido). Manuscript data has been extracted from the original three volumes, faithfully recreating the photographic images. The texts contained in the original have also been translated into English and Chinese and published as separate volumes. This set will be sold as a set of four books, including all three volumes plus one separate volume. What's more, this edition also includes a perfect reproduction of the "obi" that was said to only come with the second issue.
About "Provoke"
Provoke is a fanzine that was conceived in November 1968 by art critic Koji Taki (1928-2011) and photographer Takuma Nakahira (1938-2015), and was launched when poet Takahiko Okada (1939-1997) and photographer Yutaka Takanashi joined as co-authors. The subtitle is "Provocative Materials for Thought," and it is composed of photographs, essays, and poems. From the second issue, photographer Daido Moriyama also joined as a member, and the magazine was published up to the third issue, but in March 1970, the group dissolved its activities after the publication of its final collection, "First, Throw Away the World of Certainty." The rough grain, unstable composition due to no viewfinder, and unclear, out-of-focus photographs were mocked as "that, blur, and out of focus," and sparked controversy and criticism, sometimes going beyond the boundaries of photography to make a big impact on its contemporaries.
Interest in Provoke is growing year by year, not only in Japan but also overseas. In 2016, a large-scale photo exhibition titled "Provoke: Between Protest and Performance Photography in Japan, 1960-1975" was held in Austria, before traveling to Switzerland, France, and the United States. At the end of the 1960s, when major social change movements were reaching their peak around the world, the Japanese group Provoke and the activities of those around them attempted to use the camera to protest against established photographic expression and vision itself, and are now being reexamined in various places.
