Masahisa Fukase's origin, "Yuugi," is reborn after more than half a century.
Masahisa Fukase's first photo book, "Play" (Chuokoron-Shinsha, Eizo no Gendai 4), was published in 1971. This book, an omnibus compilation of the photographs that Fukase took over a decade, edited by Camera Mainichi editor Shoji Yamagishi, is made up of six chapters that express the striking correspondence between photography and life, and is filled with images that have guided his subsequent work. For this reprint of "Play", we have included all the photographs and texts that appeared in the original edition, aiming to reconstruct it through design, as a timeless response to Fukase.

Compiled in an omnibus format by Camera Mainichi editor Yamagishi Shoji, Play is Fukase's first photo book and is the starting point, filled with images that would shape his subsequent work.
"Play" is composed of six chapters that show the striking correspondence between photography and life. "Play" depicts Yoko Wanibe at a livestock slaughterhouse, photographing her posing in a black cloak alongside the livestock being slaughtered; "Longevity" depicts their wedding and newlywed life in the style of a personal novel; "Play" depicts the days when Fukase lived together with Yoko after running away from home in the underground scene of Shinjuku; "Mei," Fukase's earliest work, which also includes a photo of his former lover, Yukiyo Kawakami, when she was pregnant; "Mother" and "Fu," which photograph Yoko and her mother. This is Fukase's first photobook, which turns his lens on himself and his family, frankly capturing the contrast and connection between life and death, and expressing the playful nature of life through his photographic expression.
For this reprint of "Yuugi," we have included all the photographs and texts that appeared in the original edition. In addition, we aimed to reconstruct it through design, and we have created a timeless response to Fukase, such as the relationship between the photographs and the surrounding space, and the multiple exposure-like design of the title.
The photo book "Play," which casts multiple light on the activities of "Homo Ludens," will once again prove to be an important volume as a perspective on Fukase's work and on ourselves.
