Hiroshi Wataya, the pinnacle of 40 years of men's fashion illustration
Hiroshi Wataya is one of Japan's leading men's fashion illustrators. His nickname is "The Artist."
This book is the artist's first collection of works in the 40 years since his debut. He made his debut in 1979, at the age of 21, with an illustration he brought to the magazine Popeye (also published in this book) as a boy who had been sneaking peeks at his older brother's men's fashion magazines. Influenced by American illustrations of the 1950s, his works include scenes of adorable couples and happy families, with a focus on men's fashion, and many of these are included in this book. Meanwhile, his caricatures and interview reports, which he calls "stupid touches" and which he drew mainly for men's fashion magazines, have earned him many fans as another side of the artist, and these are also included.
In addition to precise realism, the book features details of fashion and goods backed by a wealth of knowledge, as well as an exceptional sense and bright use of color. With each turn of the page, the artist's wonderful world unfolds.
There are few illustrators in the world today who can create fashion illustrations that inherit the style of the golden age of American illustration in the 1950s with such precision, and even before the release of this art book, he has received interview requests from the New York Times, the magazine, the Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies at Harvard University, and others.
The book also includes contributions from pioneer men's fashion illustrator Kazuo Hozumi, fashion historian Kaori Nakano, and columnist Atsushi Ide, who has worked with the artist on magazine serials for a long time. It also features a long interview about the artist from before his debut to the present, about his hobbies and his own fashion, and words of encouragement for those who aspire to be men's fashion illustrators.
