Built by Le Corbusier in 1929–30, the world-famous Villa Savoy has become an iconic 20th-century building. But who were Pierre and Eugénie Savoy, the people who commissioned their suburban home? Why did they turn to Le Corbusier? And what kind of life did they lead in what they called their "bright time"?
Jean-Marc Savoie is their grandson. Drawing on historical documents and family memories, Jean-Marc tells the story of the house and its inhabitants. For various reasons, not many family records remain. Now Jean-Philippe Delorme, who has long been fascinated by the building, reinvents life there - as if he had lived there himself - through 17 illustrations.
It was requisitioned during the war, renovated for agricultural development, and finally saved from destruction by a campaign by architects from around the world and the support of André Malraux. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it continues to retain its charm and its power to fascinate. (Publisher's comment)
