The definitive edition that fully expresses the beauty and technique of traditional architecture!
"The Form of Japanese Architecture I" was published by TOTO Publishing in 2016.
This large-format photo book is the first of a two-volume series that architect Yutaka Saito has taken over many years to photograph the pinnacle of Japanese architecture from each era, from ancient times to the early modern period.
Volume 1 begins with Ise Shrine and includes 19 shrines, temples, and 29 buildings from ancient times to the early Middle Ages, mainly from the Asuka, Nara, Heian, and Kamakura periods.
The book features a wealth of photographs that showcase a number of extremely valuable architectural heritage sites, including Horyuji Temple, the world's oldest wooden structure, Shosoin, which is representative of the Tenpyo period, the Golden Hall of Toshodaiji Temple, Byodoin Temple's Phoenix Hall, which symbolizes the magnificent aristocratic culture of the Heian period, Ujikami Shrine, the oldest remaining shrine structure, Todaiji Temple, which symbolizes the breath of a new era in the Middle Ages, and Chogen's masterpiece, Jodo Temple's Jodo Hall. These photographs are taken from the clear and unique perspective that only an architect can provide, and are presented in a wealth of photographs.
The bilingual Japanese-English text provides easy-to-understand explanations of the historical background, characteristics, and highlights of each building through explanatory pages and detailed photo captions, comprehensively presenting the appeal and value of Japanese architecture with unprecedented depth and information.
This is a truly moving book that captures the essence of Japanese architecture.
