Yoshiko Okaue burst onto the art scene in the 1950s like a comet after being discovered by Shuzo Takiguchi, a leading figure in the Surrealist movement at the time, with her photo collage works, in which she cut out and assembled photographs from graphic magazines such as "LIFE," and fashion magazines such as "VOGUE" and "Harper's BAZAAR," which had been left in Japan as souvenirs left behind by the Allied forces after the war.
Influenced by Max Ernst, this world combined the polar opposites of photojournalism and cutting-edge fashion, exuding the feminine sensibility of the time and still stirring our hearts when we look at it today.
The new book, "Okaue Yoshiko Photo Collage: Miracle of Silence," features about 100 pieces that were produced during her short production period from 1950 to 1956, and categorizes them into theatrical spaces: "Act I: View from the Confession Room," "Act II: The Muses at Her Own Pleasure," "Act III: We Are Free," and "Act IV: Play." It features poems and essays by Okaue herself, a letter from Takiguchi Shuzo, and an original essay by Jimbo Kyoko entitled "Silent Rose: Okaue Yoshiko - Collage of Requiem and Celebration," examining her work from multiple perspectives.
The catalog is A4 size, almost the same size as the original work, allowing fans to experience the traps hidden in every detail. In addition, the collage expressions, which Yamada Photoengraving has undertaken with all his might, are reproduced at an unprecedented level of perfection that will make fans drool.
At the talk event, we will invite Kunio Iwaya and Kyoko Jimbo to reveal the secrets and charms of Yoshiko Okanoue's creations from various angles, along with her new book. We look forward to your participation.
