[From the artist: About this exhibition]
Up until now, I have frequently incorporated pairs of objects into my work.
The reason for this is that it makes it easier to emphasize the sense of space that a three-dimensional work exudes, and because I want the viewer to imagine a story in the "space" between the two realities.
For example, dual works such as Tawaraya Sotatsu's Wind God and Thunder God Screen and the Kongorikishi statues at the gates of temples and shrines contain an invisible "space" within them. "Space" plays a role in connecting polar dualities such as beginning and end, front and back, life and death, stillness and movement, and we can imagine our own stories in that space by using the elements of "beginning" and "end" expressed in form as clues. What lies behind things and what lies between things cannot be seen at first glance, but I believe that the ability to imagine what cannot be seen is, and will continue to be, essential.
In the past and now, the world continues to be divided by each person's sense of justice and their own opinions. Peace, freedom, equality, justice, and other things that many people desire but find difficult to obtain can surely be realized in the "space between." Seeing things from a different perspective than your own, trying the opposite approach, may give birth to a new story that did not exist before. Even if it seems like an illusion, I believe that continuing to weave stories through art will bring about some kind of change in the future.
