[About Sayaka Maruyama's personal image collection "memorandom" series]
"The vivid emotions and memories that arise at each moment fade over time, are forgotten, or are overwritten with my own new interpretations. For me, editing and designing a book is the act of leaving behind the outlines of memories." (Maruyama Sayaka)
"Memorandom" is a collection of personal images by Sayaka Maruyama. It is made up of random materials such as random images that appear in her mind, photos of her daily life, and sometimes artworks and drawings. Fragments of ideas and thoughts are collaged in a way that feels like a diary or memo that is haphazardly written down every day. The artist also edited and designed the book herself, as an attempt to preserve the purity of her memories and sensory parts (inspiration).
[About the new book "memorandom 2"]
"It's a lower-energy winter than usual. In the midst of these hazy days, I often go for walks in parks and nature to relax, and the sparkle of the sunlight reflecting off the water's surface is particularly dazzling and burned into my memory. This work is a compilation of photographs of the afterimages of countless lights that gave me a sense of hope in my daily life, as well as images that struck a chord in my heart at random moments in my daily life. It is a book that reflects my own feelings from the winter of 2023 to around July 2024, and the contours of countless lights." (Maruyama Sayaka)
About memorandom 2: Emotional Particles
Even when I have a time when I am seriously down,
I eventually forget about it because I start to feel better.
I eventually forget about it because I start to feel better.
Oblivions are necessary for our emotional well-being but I had an urge to document how I seeing was the world during the indescribable emotional isolation because I think that the period is worth remembering.
The photographic images I have captured reflect my unconscious desire to distance myself from ruminative thoughts and negative emotions that have gotten out of control. The moments when I was capturing the lights outside the world, I felt a sense of hope.
