[Talk event] Taka Kawachi x Shuichi Ikeya
Commemorating the release of "Saul Leiter Photo Book WOMEN"
Saul Leiter (1923-2013) is a legendary photographer who made his shocking world debut with Steidl at the age of 83. In the 1970s, he planned to create a nude photo book, but the project never came to fruition. This project is a collection of intimate nude photographs recently discovered in Saul Leiter's vast archives, taken by Leiter of women he knew.
Starting in 1946, the year Leiter arrived in New York, he continued to photograph nude women for the next 20 years. This book is composed of black-and-white photographs that capture the private space lit by natural light in his studio in New York's leafy East Village, as well as color works in which he has painted over the black-and-white photographs.
Ikeya Shuichi, editor of the Japan-original "Saul Leiter Photo Book WOMEN," will be joined by Kawachi Taka, director of the overseas business department at Benrido, the company that produces Saul Leiter's portfolio, to talk at length about Leiter's photographs and the appeal of Leiter as a person, while looking at the nude photographs from the book as well as photographs (for the first time ever shown) that Kawachi took when she visited Leiter's studio last April.
What makes his photographs so special? What did Saul Leiter, known for his color photographs, want to express in black and white? A new image of Saul Leiter may emerge from this book that would not have been apparent if you had simply looked at the photobook.
