Daruma originates from Bodhidharma Daishi, who spread Zen Buddhism to India, China, and Japan. It is said that the current form of Daruma was modeled after the posture of a person meditating.
This time, the Daruma doll has been designated as a traditional craft item, an Edo Kimekomi doll, by the national government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and was created by Toko Kakinuma, who is also certified as a traditional craftsman, using the same Edo Kimekomi techniques as the Hina dolls he normally makes.
The costume worn by the Daruma doll is made from Nishijin fabric from Kyoto, which is used in the production of Hina dolls, giving the Daruma a unique expression never seen before.
In ancient times, Daruma dolls were famous as charms to protect children from disease, and as lucky charms for bountiful harvests, prosperous business, and good fortune.
To make a wish, first place the included felt eye sticker on the left eye, and when your wish is granted, place the eye sticker on the right eye as well.
