About the productJapanese

A Magazine Curated By has appointed Lucie and Luke Meier, creative directors of Milan-based Jil Sander, as guest curators for its 21st issue.

The book calls for reflection and dialogue on the duality of "HUMAN NATURE/MOTHER NATURE," a theme common to all of his work.

The book is based on a strong contrast between the natural world, the architecture, and the cultural phenomena of modern humanity. Breathtaking landscapes are woven throughout, in striking scenes that capture subtle beauty at both the micro and macro scales. The stories of the authors' lives and careers are told through the Canadian wilderness, the Swiss Alps, the streets of Paris and Florence, and the various artists' workspaces across Europe and the United States. Among the many contributions are essays that examine themes presented through photography, painting, illustration, interviews, music, and poetry, as well as the liberal arts education at Black Mountain College and the sustainability of contemporary fashion.

Alongside the pair's impressive historical works of contemporary art, the 200 pages also feature new images of rising stars who have established themselves in the world of photography. The book is presented in the traditional art book format, and closes with a text that appears as a certain "legend." Many of the projects are by husband, wife, and sibling teams, including sketches by the children of the pair's extended families and friends, giving the book a deep weightage in the theme of "family."

Issue 21 is offset printed on Italian recycled "Lenza" paper and features a cover that is a 3D scan of a floral washi paper handmade by a third-generation paper maker in the hills of Noto Peninsula. The book was bound with threaded binding that leaves the spine visible, and was printed in the Aosta region of northern Italy. The unique typeface, "Meier," was inspired by Swiss franc coins and designed by Buero Paris.

"When we started discussing the concept for the magazine, we quickly decided to focus on nature, specifically the relationship between human nature and mother nature. It's a concept that's front and center in our daily lives, and we felt it was important to embrace both in this issue." - Lucy and Luke Meyer
