"Monica" is Daniel Clowes' first new work in about seven years since his previous work "Patience." This new comic is a full-length work drawn from scratch and divided into nine chapters. The story centers on the protagonist Monica and her mother Penny, but the setting is diverse, including the Vietnam War, a cult's stronghold, and a remote resort in California. The content is also very diverse, ranging from hard-boiled to cosmic horror and old-age love.

This ambitious work draws on all of Clowes's skills and knowledge to shed light on the history of mankind while tracing the life of the protagonist, a candle store owner. The story unfolds at a dizzying pace in a simple but dense manner, and even if you finish reading it once, you will likely notice the connections in the small details if you read it again.
