"I don't want to live in a place like this." Kumiko, a 76-year-old Japanese-Canadian whose husband has long since passed away, was placed in a care home by her daughters. She initially followed their decision because she thought it was for the best, but then she secretly ran away and rented a small room in downtown East Vancouver. She keeps in contact with her eldest daughter by email, but she has not revealed her address.

As Kumiko decorated her room to her liking, ate whatever she wanted, and enjoyed the simple pleasures of swimming in the public pool, the "shadow of death" followed her from the care home.
