The animated film version of "AKIRA" was released in theaters in 1988 and revolutionized the world of animation beyond the realm of manga.
This book is the second of a three-volume collection of the layouts, original drawings, and corrections used in the production of the film, all drawn by Otomo Katsuhiro himself, who was both the original author and director.
A layout is a drawing that contains the necessary information for each scene that makes up the main anime, and serves as a blueprint for the animation.
In addition to the original drawings and layouts for "Part B (continued from the previous volume) and the beginning of Part C" of the four parts A, B, C, and D that make up the entire film, this volume also includes valuable reproduction cel drawings of many famous scenes that were created based on them.
Following on from the two previously published "Storyboard Collection" volumes, this volume will reveal in detail the creative process behind these cutting-edge expressions.
The film version of "AKIRA" was constructed through a meticulous process, with the "layout" of each cut, showing the backgrounds and character movements, directed and revised by the animation director, art director, and even director Otomo himself.
This is a book with an unprecedented binding, where you can experience the incredible uncompromising screen design by simply flipping through the pages and seeing each one move in succession.
Like the previous volume, the book is almost entirely printed in color and includes many reproduction cels.
This volume in particular includes a large number of corrected original drawings in a single shot in succession, allowing you to see the movement of the images in greater detail. This allows you to further understand the details of the character movements (=acting) that Director Otomo was so particular about.
The total number of pages is approximately 710, exceeding the previous volume.
The title of the book, "Layouts & Key Frames," is the English translation of "Layouts & Original Artwork."
