The anime film version of "AKIRA" was released in theaters in 1988 and revolutionized the world of animation beyond the realm of manga. This anime is an exceptional masterpiece that has received worldwide acclaim, even though it was produced in an unusual production system in which the original author, Katsuhiro Otomo, himself served as director and scriptwriter. This book is the first of two volumes that compile the huge amount of storyboards that Otomo himself drew for the production of the anime version. It was also published in two volumes by the Young Magazine editorial department in 1988, but after going out of print in a short period of time, this rare item that had long been a premium item has finally been reprinted as the first title of the first series and first distribution of the "Katsuhiro Otomo Complete Works". It has been more than 30 years since it was released as a standalone product. When we think of storyboards, we tend to think of rough, unfinished blueprints, but the precision of the storyboards in this book is on a different level. This is because the author drew this in 1987, when the manga was on hiatus due to the production of the movie version of "AKIRA," and was drawing the middle of the fifth volume of the book. Katsuhiro Otomo
Manga artist and film director from Miyagi Prefecture.
He made his debut in Manga Action in 1973. His representative works include Dome and AKIRA.
In 1988, he produced the animated film "AKIRA," which was highly acclaimed both in Japan and overseas, and became a pioneer of the Japanese animation movement (Japanimation) overseas.
In 2013, he was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal by the Japanese government, and in 2014, he was awarded the Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government.
In 2015, he won the Grand Prize at the 42nd Angoulême International Comics Festival (France).
