This large-format photo book is a compilation of selected masterpieces of Kabuki photography taken by the world-renowned photographer, Kishin Shinoyama, over a period of more than 40 years.
This is a completely different kind of photo book from other photo books that document all Kabuki performances or that follow individual Kabuki actors; it is a unique work that captures the fundamental greatness and magic of Kabuki through the eyes of photographer Kishin Shinoyama.
Kishin Shinoyama has photographed many famous stage plays and actors, and it is no exaggeration to say that these photographs were born from a miraculous crossover between the moment when the god of Kabuki descended on the actors performing on stage and the moment when the god of photography descended on the photographer. There are many photos of Kabuki plays, but from this vast collection we have carefully selected only those that capture the moments, expressions, and acting that could only be captured with Shinoyama's photographic skill.
From another perspective, this photobook can also be seen as a unique work by Kishin Shinoyama, who was drawn to the charms of Kabuki after meeting Tamasaburo Bando in 1972 and has continued to photograph the performances of many great actors. In other words, Shinoyama's photographs can be likened to the paintings of Kabuki actors by Sharaku, an Edo-period ukiyo-e artist.
Shinoyama describes his photographs as "a mirror of the times," and there is no doubt that this photo book will become an important and valuable documentary of this era, when great Kabuki actors flourished.
It is my sincere hope that the charm of the world of Kabuki, the pinnacle of Japanese aesthetics, will spread throughout the world through this photo collection by Kishin Shinoyama.
