Epiphany

I always want to be sensitive inside.
It's not about doing photography from within.
To take photographs outside of myself. To feel.
If you increase the sensitivity of all your nerves, you may end up getting injured.
But that's not a big deal.
When you close your eyes, your eyelids will heal.
It's fine as long as the number of photos increases as the number of scratches increases.
Photos always take me to a new world.
When I think about it, I feel like I've been working on photography up to this point while driving myself half-insane.
Starting with a thorough confrontational gaze,
Now my gaze is drawn to ordinary and simple things.
It's not because I'm tired and my sensitivity has become average.
The simpler the form or shape, the more you can sense the soul.
A photograph that is supposed to be fixed but seems to move, becoming alive.
I hope that we are entering such a new phase.

Yamagami Shinpei
Born in 1984. Resides in Kamakura City.
After leaving Iino Media Pro, he started working as a photographer. He started taking photographs under the influence of his grandmother and grandfather.
His major solo exhibitions include "0189" (Shrine Restaurant | SUPPOSE DESIGN OFFICE, Youngtree Press/Tokyo/2017), "Yamagami Shinpei Exhibition" (Shibunkaku/Tokyo, Kyoto/2019), "Refined Black" (Laboratory △ll/Tokyo/2019), "The Disintegration Loops" (POETIC SCAPE/Tokyo/2019), "liminal (eyes)" (POETIC SCAPE/Tokyo/2023, Bookstore Seiki/Fukuoka/2023, PURPLE/Kyoto/2023, Osaragi Jiro Cha-tei/Kamakura/2023). His photo books include "Helix" (Minagawa Akira/Mina Perhonen/2022) and "liminal (eyes) YAMAGAMI" (bookshop M/2023).
