Specification A collection of works by Japanese photographer Takashi Homma. This work focuses on the iconic subject of Mount Fuji. The artist references the tradition of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and approaches the medium of photography with a distinctive and essential approach. This work was published in conjunction with an exhibition to be held at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum from October 6, 2023 to January 21, 2024.
In this work, Fuji explores one of the most iconic and widely recognised symbols of Japan, and indeed the world. Taking as its title Hokusai Katsushika's famous ukiyo-e woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, Fuji is evocative of his native tradition of expression and representation while at the same time engaging with his emotive subject in a new and evocative way. Using both pinhole and digital technology, Fuji creates a series of ghostly images of the mountain. The collage of Mount Fuji, located southwest of Tokyo, ambiguously places it within the wider landscape, evoking yet subverting its grandeur. With this work, Fuji has written a subtle and essential new chapter in the history of Japanese visual culture.
