Specification Either way, there is always a picture in my mind. --Anzai Mizumaru
A single line drawn on a blank piece of paper.
Illustrator Mizumaru Anzai has created many pictures that express his own unique world by arranging his favorite motifs in an exquisite balance.
Chikura Town, Chiba Prefecture (now Minamiboso City, Chiba Prefecture), is a seaside town located at the southern tip of the Boso Peninsula, where he spent his impressionable childhood. A line drawn on a piece of paper connected to the vast horizon he could see from there.
In the vast "sea of work" left behind, there are many pictures and words that resemble sparkling pieces of glass and shells on the shore.
This book is woven like a single horizon that connects seamlessly to the vast ocean, and like the gentle progression of the seasons.
We will also present 70 exquisite paintings with valuable comments from each illustrator, revealing what they were feeling and how they spent their time.
Mizumaru Anzai (1942 - 2014)
Born in Tokyo. Illustrator. Suffering from severe asthma in his childhood, he moved to his mother's hometown, Chikura Town, Chiba Prefecture (now Minamiboso City, Chiba Prefecture). He spent his impressionable years until he graduated from junior high school in this place overlooking the abundant sea. Chikura often appears as a primordial landscape in his essays and novels. In later years, he said, "Whenever I draw a horizon on paper, for some reason, the horizon of the sea of Chikura always comes to mind."
After graduating from Nihon University College of Art, he worked as an art director at Dentsu, ADAC (a New York design studio), and Heibonsha. In 1981, he became a freelance illustrator. Since then, he has worked on advertisements, magazine covers and illustrations, and book covers, as well as many novels, essays, manga, and picture books, which continue to enjoy high popularity today.
He has received numerous awards, including the Asahi Advertising Award, the Mainichi Advertising Award, the Japan Graphic Exhibition Annual Writer Excellence Award, and the Kinema Junpo Reader's Award. His novels include "Amaryllis" and "Awarata Umibe," essays include "Aoyama no Aozora" and "Tabi Tabi no Tabi," picture books include "Gatan Goton Gatan Goton" and "Cookie no Obentoya-san," and manga include "Ao no Jidai" and "Kanzenban Futsujin ni Hito."
