1909 -2001. The greatest art historian of the 20th century. Born in Vienna. In 1936, he became a member of the Warburg Institute in London, and served as its director and professor of classics at the University of London from 1959 to 1976.
He has been awarded many prizes around the world, including a knighthood, the Order of Merit, the Goethe Prize, the Hegel Prize and the Erasmus Prize.
