About the productJapanese

Scheduled for release on March 20th

This book was produced following the discovery, a quarter of a century later, of a film that was shown in slides at the "Daido Moriyama: Stray Dog" exhibition held at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1999. The exhibition subsequently toured the United States and Europe, marking the start of Daido Moriyama's step onto the world stage and leading to his international success.

The book includes 140 works that Daido Moriyama selected and printed onto slide film at the time (1999). Editing, binding design, and publishing were handled by Machiguchi Satoru, one of Japan's leading bookbinders. The cover features Moriyama's masterpiece, "Stray Dog," with two designs, one on the front and one on the back. This represents the existence of two works, one on the front and one on the back, in the process of spreading the work from the time of shooting (1971/Misawa City, Aomori Prefecture) to the world. In addition, four curators who are active at the forefront of the world write stories (in English) about their encounters with Moriyama. Moriyama himself reads each story and gives a valuable talk (in English) looking back on the time. As a bonus for the Japanese release, a "Japanese translation booklet" with all of these texts translated is included.
