Narahara Ikko, one of Japan's leading postwar photographers
The masterpiece "Vanishing Time", which condenses the results of his four years in the United States, is set to be published in a new edition!
His first solo exhibition, "Human Land," held at Matsushima Gallery in Ginza in May 1956, made him famous, and depicted the rivalry between "human beings" and "land" in the man-made island of Hashima (commonly known as Gunkanjima) off the coast of the Nagasaki Peninsula, and the ash-covered Kurokami village on Sakurajima in Kagoshima. His subsequent exhibition, "Kingdom," held at Fuji Photo Salon in Ginza in September 1958, depicted two spaces isolated from the outside world: "Garden of Silence," set in a Trappist monastery in Hokkaido, and "Inside the Walls," set in a women's prison in Wakayama. These works were highly acclaimed as masterpieces of innovative and unique documentary photography.
He then traveled around Europe for three years, based in Paris, and returned to Japan five years later with his first photo book, "Europe: Standing Still," which won numerous awards in Japan and became Narahara's masterpiece in both name and reality.
So in April 1970, Narahara set off for his next destination, America.
The photo book "Vanishing Time", which he published as a culmination of his four years of activity in America, during which he stayed until 1974, features 101 surreal, large-scale photographs that confront the American continent with a dry sensibility, capturing them as if in another world. It was published by The Asahi Shimbun Company in 1975 in a large-format binding (369 x 355 mm) by designer Katsui Mitsuo, with a three-sided back box and a shipping case.
This final edition of these works has now been reconstructed and edited to allow viewers to fully appreciate the artistic expression and composition of his photographs, resulting in the publication of "Where Time Has Vanished."
At the end of the book, there is an original commentary on the works by Noriko Tsutaya of the Shimane Museum of Art, who has been researching Narahara Ikko for many years.
The book design is by graphic designer Yuya Sano, who also worked on "Kingdom: Domains" and "Europe: Standing Still."
This is Narahara's masterpiece and treasure, which forms a companion to his classic "Europe: Time Stands Still." Please be sure to pick up this book and enjoy it to the fullest.
*This book is a limited edition and there are currently no plans to reprint it.
*This is a pre-order item and will be shipped sequentially from May 30, 2025 onwards.
