From his scandalous success to his premature fall and evolution in his later years, this is the definitive book tracing his artistic career and life.
Beardsley was made by his time and remade his time.
An elegant magician of the "concordance of opposites." A book that will leave you dazzled, where bad taste and the height of aesthetic sophistication ironically come together on every page!
- Keiichiro Hirano
Aubrey Beardsley, a British illustrator who died at the tender age of 25. This book traces his career, which produced rare works of precise line drawing and bold black and white color planes, with over 200 important works, mainly from the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) collection. In addition to illustrations for his breakthrough work "Le Morte d'Arthur," his representative work "Salome," and his later masterpieces "Mademoiselle Maupin" and "The Robber of the Hair," this definitive book also introduces drawings, prints, and colored posters.
Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898)
He was active in the late 19th century in England as a painter and illustrator. He gained prominence with his illustrations for Oscar Wilde's Salome, but his life fell into disuse when Wilde was imprisoned for homosexuality in 1985. He then broke new ground in his style with illustrations for magazines such as Savoy and Mademoiselle Maupin, but died at the young age of 25 from his chronic illness, tuberculosis. He was influenced by ukiyo-e and is also known as one of the central figures of aestheticism and Art Nouveau.
