I have been a photographer for over 50 years, and my style has been to shoot almost exclusively in monochrome. The characteristic of monochrome is that the light, composition, and facial expressions of the people are emphasized by the absence of color, but there were two times when I felt I should have shot in color.
The first time was around 1980 when I was living in London, when the New Romantics movement emerged after punk rock. The makeup and costumes were flashy, and the music made extensive use of synthesizers, creating a stylish, futuristic sound.
When I went to the club where they gathered, I saw them surrendering themselves to the darkness, and dancing and standing there in the colorful lights, which made me feel like a school of deep-sea fish. I used color film to shoot them.
The second time was in the past few years. Schools, companies and governments have started to relax restrictions on hair color. Freed from having solid black hair, people are now able to express themselves by dyeing their hair. Some people say that by dyeing their hair in colors that suit them, they have become more confident and true to themselves. I am often captivated by the colors and appearances of these people, and I wanted to photograph them in color.
When I searched for a subject, I found that not only the hair color, but also the sea and sky of the rustic landscape were very photogenic. Whether I was in Tokyo or anywhere in the country, the scenes woven by the light, people's expressions and colors were so beautiful and dramatic.
The expressions and gestures of young people and couples looking towards the future are particularly striking.
On the other hand, when we look around the world, just when we thought the COVID-19 pandemic was over, war is breaking out everywhere. Even though we are surrounded by so many beautiful sights, there is also so much injustice created by fellow human beings that even small happiness is difficult to find.
Let us pray that one day a beautiful rainbow of human harmony will be seen in the sky all over the world, transcending national borders, ideologies, and disparities - something that humanity has not been able to achieve until now.
