In 2024, photographer Ryuichi Ishikawa
In Seongsu-dong, Seoul, South Korea,
I encountered that "wall".

Seongsu-dong is a town where old factories have been renovated and reborn as a hub for cutting-edge fashion and culture in Korea. In this town where old and new collide, Ishikawa took his camera and continued to take pictures of people on the street for just two hours in the evening, when tree branches cast shadows on the brick walls.

This work is a homage by Walker Evans, a photographer who is one of the leading figures in 20th century American documentary photography, to Labor Anonymous, a group that continued to recruit workers.

Young people dressed in cutting-edge Korean fashion, old people who have survived the postwar period, young men in military uniforms... The portrayal of modern Koreans as consumers as recorded through Ishikawa's eyes makes us realize that we too are walking in front of the same wall.

Ishikawa, who won the 40th Kimura Ihei Photography Award for his works "Polyphony of Breathtaking Scenery" and "Okinawa Portraits 2010-2012" (2014), continues to take photographs in Okinawa, where he was born and raised. In 2021, he released "Inside of Life," in which he ventured into the mountains and photographed the organs of animals he had hunted and eaten in nature. In 2022, he released "zk," a culmination of his work to date.

From "breathtaking views" to "zk (Zekkei)." Ishikawa says.
