Pioneering conceptualist Takamatsu Jiro (1936-1998) was a major influence on Mono-ha artists and had a career spanning more than four decades during which he had a profound impact on Japanese postwar culture as an artist, theorist and teacher.
Rooted in broad philosophical principles, Takamatsu seeks to push art outside of traditional institutional environments and collapse the boundaries between art and life. His practice ranges from appearance and material, drawing, sculpture to photography.
The book features archival photographs, including works shown for the first time in Los Angeles, and stills from a television documentary Takamatsu was making in 1974.
This lavishly illustrated book offers a timely reassessment of Takamatsu's work at a time of great resurgence in appreciation for Japanese avant-garde art, and features essays by Nakanishi Hiroyuki, curator at the National Museum of Art, Osaka; Jordan Carter, curator of visual arts at the Walker Art Center; and Takamatsu himself.
