LUMI?RE - Light
A long-awaited new work, the first in 10 years, born out of the COVID-19 pandemic
In early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused an explosive spread around the world, forcing people to drastically reduce contact with others and confine themselves to limited spaces such as their homes. Mikiya Takimoto, who has made his living through photography, not only saw all of his commercial and advertising work, which usually involves large numbers of people, come to a halt, but he could no longer fly around the world to create his works using large equipment.
At that time, Takimoto came across some small rapeseed flowers blooming on a riverbank, and felt the same natural power as the powerful life force of the planet Earth that he had seen in the uninhabitable remote areas he had photographed, and began photographing wild flowers. He found the continuous moments of life in familiar flowers and plants, and spent three years exploring the "microcosm" that lives within them, completing the LUMI?RE (French for "light") series. In addition, in the fall of 2020, Takimoto participated in an international photography festival in Kyoto, where he learned about "enyu" (a French word meaning that all things blend together completely and do not interfere with each other) and faced the architecture and gardens of temples filled with tranquility. There, he felt that he was connected to the flow of time that has continued from hundreds and thousands of years ago to the present, and he walked around various temples and photographed them to compile the PRI?RE (French for "prayer") series.
This is Mikiya Takimoto's first new photo book in about 10 years, and it reflects on the cycle of life and the coexistence of living things with the planet Earth.
