Ukiyo-e, a major medium from the Edo period, is still widely loved today as a form of Japanese culture that Japan can be proud of around the world, and exhibitions of popular ukiyo-e artists of the time, such as Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige, are still often held in art museums today.
However, what gave them the opportunity to enter the world was the production by people called "publishers."
Among the many publishers that existed at the time, Tsutaya Jusaburo boasted overwhelming popularity due to his outstanding planning skills.
In this special feature, we will introduce in an easy-to-understand manner the many masterpieces produced by Tsutaya Juzaburo and the work of publishers in creating these masterpieces, along with key works, under the keywords "Branding of Yoshiwara," "Gisakuhon and beautiful Kyokahon," "The invention of o-kubi-e," and "Tsutaya Juzaburo after that."

This special feature coincides with the NHK Taiga drama "Berabou - Tsutae Eika no Yume Banashi" which will begin airing in January 2025.
Toshiyuki Suzuki, a leading researcher of Tsutaya Juzaburo and a researcher of the "Berabou" period; Junichi Okubo, an art historian and ukiyo-e researcher who published "Utamaro" through the Kadokawa Sophia Bunko in September 2024;
We are publishing an interview with Hinohara Kenji, Chief Curator at the Ota Memorial Museum of Art, which published "Hokusai: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" through the Iwanami Bunko series.
