A collection of works by Luigi Ghirri, a pioneer of Italian color photography. This book was published as a joint publication by the MASI Museum in Lugano (Museo d'arte della Svizzera italiana) and MACK, in conjunction with an exhibition being held at the museum from September 2024 to January 2025.

Ghirri's work is boundless and rich, born of the artist's boundless curiosity, but his fascination with travel is especially evident, echoing not only in his photographs but also in his publications and writings. This book, by British curator James Lingwood, traces the path of Luigi Ghirri's photographic work, created between 1970 and 1991. It explores how VIAGGI (travel) is expressed in many different ways.

The book features photographs of iconic landscapes such as the Dolomites and northern Italian lakes, the mirror worlds of seaside resorts along the Adriatic and Mediterranean coasts, art galleries, museums, archaeological sites and theme parks, on maps and postcards, and the thought-provoking books and memorabilia that line the artist's own bookshelves. Taking familiar landmarks and unexpected detours, the book weaves together some of Ghiri's best-loved photographs with previously unpublished work unearthed in his archive.

Presenting the work of one of the late 20th century's most enduring artists through one of his most beloved themes - travel - the exhibition delves into the artist's unique concept of playful yet profound image-making in an age of mass photography and tourism. Complemented by essays by curators Tobia Bezzola, the aforementioned James Lingwood, and art and photography historian Maria Antonella Pelizzari, the exhibition explores the Italian and global context of Ghirri's work, and Ghirri's wider engagement with image-making and its consumption, and how they relate to his work.
