A collection of works by New York-based artist Abdulhamid Kircher.

The book is the product of the artist's experience digging into his father's past, discovering a generational trauma in the patriarch of the family, and subsequently discovering his artistic self within his heritage. At the age of 17, he reunited with his father, who had just been released from prison for drug trafficking and attempted murder, and his photographic journey began as a reflection on his own past. Born in Berlin and expatriated to the United States at a young age, he developed a deep relationship with the medium of photography and its possibilities, while also getting to know his father and his Turkish culture and heritage. In doing so, the camera provided a gateway to intimacy.

Delving into psychological questions of identity, the glorification of violence, the myth of masculinity, and the idea of photography as a veil that provides a mechanism for coping with and understanding the world, the book weaves a deeper personal and autobiographical thread with photographic force and candor. The thread's visual voice speaks at the intersection of an inner monologue and a nuanced documentary approach. Through a complex assemblage of portraits, observations, records, and diaries, the book weaves a web of visual associations in which the author captures the tension between speculation and reality, the unknowability of even those closest to us, and how we are prevented from choosing the direction of the life we are born into.
