For decades, American photographers Ken Graves and his wife Eva Lipman have keenly observed high school dances, military ceremonies, football games, boxing matches and other American social rituals, seeking to capture the complex interpersonal tensions that are often overlooked in these mundane occasions. From these common occurrences, the photographers often detect sexual tensions that they find not only in the world around them, but also in their own relationships. Generosity and humility, dominance and submission, passion, violence and tenderness, straight and homosexual, all are beautifully brought out through the intimacy of their photography.

This work is a collection of human gestures that, with deep visual sensibility, betray the complex inner lives of their subjects. Desire, fear, boredom, fatigue - a myriad of emotions that defy words - are expressed through the sharp light of the camera and flash.
