The international traveling exhibition "I'm So Happy You Are Here: Japanese Women Photographers from the 1950s to Now" is scheduled to travel around the world for about four years, starting at the Arles International Photography Festival in France from July 1 to September 29, 2024. This book, published in conjunction with this large-scale international project focusing on Japanese women photographers, introduces a total of 26 artists across generations from the 1950s to the present.

Curated by Leslie A. Martin (Executive Director of Printed Matter), Mariko Takeuchi (Photography Critic/Professor at Kyoto University of the Arts), and Pauline Vermare (Curator of Photography at the Brooklyn Museum), the exhibition weaves together three main motifs: sensitive yet bold observations of everyday life, a critical perspective on the role of Japanese women in Japanese society, and experimentation and expansion of the photographic form. With a detailed illustrated bibliography by Mark Feustell and Russette Lederman, and contributions from leading Japanese curators, critics, and historians such as Michiko Kasahara and Noriko Fuku, this is an essential volume for gaining a multifaceted perspective on Japan and Japanese photography.
