This is the latest work by Winant, who is one of America's leading young feminist contemporary artists and is actively exhibiting at MoMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art. While her first work, My Brith, was themed around pregnancy, this work takes up the topic of abortion, tackling the topic of this year's US presidential election. In fact, it has only been 49 years since women across the US had the right to abortion, from 1973 to 2022, and now abortion is banned by state laws. This book was created as an antithesis to the fact that anti-abortion movements use arbitrary visuals to demonstrate how the act of abortion is cruel, unethical, and immoral. Including documents from public institutions in Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, and Ohio, where the artist lives, as well as photographs she took herself, this work presents the reality that the scene of abortion is peaceful, safe, and humane on a daily basis, and encourages people to re-recognize the power of visuals.
