This is the second photo book by Rahim Fortune, a cutting-edge social documentary filmmaker, set in Texas, where he was born and raised. While his first work was autobiographical, focusing on his own family, this work broadens his scope to include the entire black American community. The title "Hardtack" refers to the "dry bread" that the Buffalo Soldiers, a unit formed only by African-Americans after the 19th century American Civil War, carried as food when on duty. The unit is known for its brave fights in many battles, including the Spanish-American War, and its contributions to American history, but the title of this book was chosen to reflect that era and the current situation, which encourages a reexamination of various values. Photographs that convey black American culture, such as abandoned churches, portraits of cowboys, children dancing traditional dances, and young people smiling confidently at homecoming parties, are mainly laid out in the center of the right page with a margin, allowing you to take your time to enjoy each photograph. This book is filled with the quiet flow of everyday life from the harsh history of the past and hope for the future.
