A collection of works by American photographer Alec Soth, who is a full member of the international photography group Magnum Photos.

From 2022 to 2024, Soth traveled across the United States, visiting 25 university art departments. This book is comprised of works that Soth created during that journey. The title of this book, "ADVICE FOR YOUNG ARTISTS," does not mean that Soth is offering wisdom or guidance to young artists, but rather that he is presenting pointed and unexplained thoughts on creating art at various stages of life and on the relationship between photography, time, and aging.

The photographs in this book range from formal classroom studies to more unruly, carefree forms of self-expression. Ambiguous mise-en-scène, found forms, and emotive portraits are interspersed with aphoristic quotations and half-finished aspirations scribbled on Post-it notes. The artist himself appears here and there among the students, mingling with them as a dubious sage.

Inspired by the Polaroid photographs made by American photographer Walker Evans in his final years, this work demonstrates the new breadth of Soth's practice, 20 years after the publication of his first collection, Sleeping by the Mississippi (2004).
