Ai Iwane made a striking debut with her photobook "KIPUKA" (Seigensha), which won her the Kimura Ihei Photography Award and the Ina Nobuo Award. She has since expanded her field of activity to the world, including winning the 3rd Prix Pictet Japan Award. Iwane's latest work, "COHO COME HOME," was published in conjunction with the second half of the exhibition "Currents / Undercurrents - Now, the Dazzling Currents Meet," which will be held at the Aomori Contemporary Art Center from July 13 to September 29, 2024.
"I took the liberty of questioning the writers, asking them to write sentences, arranging fragments of words from those sentences, selecting photographs that correspond to those fragments of words, and arranging those photographs in a 32-page book in a random order. This is the result of my work, "Ko-Ho Come Home." This is a collection of works that serves as a prologue to "The Opening," a project that Iwane Ai is currently working on." Bookbinder Satoru Machiguchi

On November 7, 2022, they succeeded in capturing that moment on camera for the first time.
The rain from the previous night flows into the tip of the tidal flats and spreads out to the left and right.
Eventually a thin stream begins to overflow from the swollen tip.
The rising and falling waves of high tide gradually draw closer to each other,
Finally, the dammed river burst its banks into the sea.
At that moment, all the water that had accumulated in the tidal flats rushed out into the sea.
A whirlpool like I'd never seen before was born, then disappeared, and I was pulled into the waves, into the sea.
Living, swell-like creatures crawled about here and there,
After about an hour, the vortex disappears.
The river flowed into the sea as if it had always been there, growing larger and wider.
I now stand at the mouth of the Matol River where we were reunited.
A new flow has just begun to open up within me.
