The year 2024 (Reiwa 6) marks the 120th anniversary of the birth of Japanese painter Okumura Koichi and the 50th anniversary of his death.
Born in Kyoto at the end of the Meiji era, Okumura went on to study at the Kyoto Municipal Painting College, where he studied under the Japanese painter Nishimura Goun. His first work, "Mountain Village," was selected for the 10th Teiten Exhibition in 1929 (Showa 4). He mainly participated in official exhibitions, and his work, "Pure Morning," which depicts a snow-covered landscape with rows of trees and clear air, with precise brushstrokes that sharply capture the seasons, was highly praised. He also won a special prize at the first Nitten Exhibition after the war.
However, in 1948 (Showa 23), he founded the group Sozo Bijutsu (now the Sogakai) with Kyujin Yamamoto, Shoko Uemura, and Fuku Akino, and began to pursue landscapes that captured the subject in broad strokes, using thick contours and surfaces, rather than the delicate lines he had used up until then. He also produced works that emphasized natural phenomena such as violent waves and clouds, and the vitality of trees.
This book features approximately 65 pieces that look back on Okumura's work from his early period to his later years. It also contains approximately 100 sketches that he made while traveling in Japan and around the world. You will be able to feel the realism of Okumura's paintings, which he drew by placing himself in nature and facing the landscape directly, as well as his outstanding composition and solid sketching.
In addition, the book introduces various works of art, such as works that have been featured on postcards and magazine covers. In addition, it also features Okumura's "words," which he contributed to newspapers and other publications along with his paintings. It gives an insight into how he felt about nature and how he depicted it.
