This is a collection of works by Juigi Ghirri, an Italian pioneer of color photography.

Between the late 1970s and the mid-1980s, the artist took a series of photographs that evoked the landscapes of his native Italy within the grounds of "Italia in Miniatura," a popular tourist destination in Rimini, Emilia-Romagna. The theme park, filled with scale models of Italy's main landscapes and architecture, has a somewhat surreal atmosphere.

The artist photographs this constructed world with a unique sensitivity to visual chance and irony, fantasy and reality, ambiguity and artifice. Reflecting the inherent photographic processes of reduction and representation, these images are characteristic of the artist's work. They are one of those works that combine a playfulness with a compelling concept.

The book features all the works in the In Scala series, plus many previously unpublished works, and is arranged in dialogue with the work of the park's founder and designer, Ivo Rambaldi. Rambaldi's maps, sketches, collages and reference images, produced during extensive research trips across Italy, are a paradoxical and analogical meditation on the possibilities of miniaturization.

Edited by curator Ilaria Campioli, conceptual artist, photographer and theorist Joan Fontcuberta and visual artist Metteo Guidi, the book also features an original essay by curator and writer Simon Garfield, as well as a series of photographs taken by Fontcuberta in response to his encounter with Ghirri and Rambaldi's park.
