About the productJapanese

This is a collection of works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, known as one of the most important American artists of the 1980s.

As a member of the graffiti group "SAMO," active in the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the late 1970s, and as a painter known for his Neo-Expressionist style, he was a leader in the New York art scene, and throughout his career he has creatively pursued the interplay between words and images.

Between 1980 and 1987, the artist filled many notebooks with drawings and handwritten texts. This book reproduces for the first time the contents of eight of these precious notebooks. They contain images and words that recur in his paintings and other works, and include iconic drawings such as crowns, teepees, and hatched hearts, as well as handwritten texts on themes such as culture, race, class, and life in New York.

As with his other work, it clearly demonstrates his deep interest in the ephemeral aspects of comic books, street art, pop art, hip hop, politics and urban life, and offers a glimpse into the creative process of one of the most creative figures in contemporary American art.

This work was selected as one of the "Top Ten Art Books to Read during Thanksgiving" of 2015, organized by artnet.
