About the productJapanese

Official catalogue for "Basquiat Exhibition Made in Japan."

In this book, Dieter Buchhart, a world authority on Basquiat, sheds light on the many facets of Basquiat's ties with Japan, as well as the influence of Japanese history and culture.
This is the definitive edition, containing approximately 130 illustrations of works, as well as essays by experts, portraits, a timeline, and more.

Jean-Michel Basquiat
An icon of 1980s New York, Jean-Michel Basquiat rose to fame in his short career through the work he drew upon, incorporating a vast range of styles, from Greek, Roman and African art to jazz, pop culture and his contemporaries, including his close friend Andy Warhol. These disparate influences were juxtaposed in the same work, combining text and painting into a continuous stream of visual information. As a teenager, Basquiat painted graffiti and produced postcards and T-shirts, before moving into a studio and achieving fame at the early age of 20.
Though his career only lasted a decade or so, he remains relevant by bridging the gap between graffiti and galleries and influencing generations of artists who followed.
