About the productJapanese

Ray's a Laugh, one of the most important photobooks of the early 20th century, has been republished for the first time in 30 years.

Published to great acclaim in 1996, Richard Billingham's Ray's a Laugh is known as one of the most important photobooks of the early 20th century and a foundational work for the Young British Artists (YBAs) generation. Now it has been reissued in a new edition for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Comprising intimate photographs capturing Billingham's often chaotic family home in the grip of alcoholism and poverty, the book was created in the 1990s with editors Michael Collins and Julian Germain.

This new edition also includes many previously unpublished works, including Billingham's unique approach to sequences influenced by his training as a painter, making it a "director's cut" edition that reintroduces a vibrant work that continues to challenge us for a new era.

"This book is about my immediate family. My father, Raymond, is a chronic alcoholic. He doesn't like to go out and mostly drinks his own brew. My mother, Elizabeth, drinks very little but smokes a lot. She likes pets and decorative things. They married in 1970 and I was born shortly after. My brother, Jason, was sent to live with Ray and Liz at 11 but has now returned to live with them. He recently became a father. Ray says Jason is out of control. Jason says Ray is funny but he doesn't want to be like him." - From the introduction to the first edition
