About the productJapanese

The latest in the series of silkscreen-printed canvas covers. A collection of photographs Moriyama took in Tokyo in 1992. All of the works included are previously unpublished and appearing for the first time in this book.

1992 was 31 years ago, when I was approaching my mid-50s and had closed my private gallery in Miyamasuzaka, Shibuya, and moved to a space near the Yotsuya 4-chome intersection. After several years of running a gallery in Shibuya, I naturally had visitors and could not just leave it as I pleased, so my patience had reached a saturation point, even though it was the result of my own actions. At that time, all I wanted to do was "take pictures!" I didn't care about what to take or how to take pictures, I just wanted to jump into the city and take pictures. I had taken pictures of the Yotsuya area, which had just changed, in no time, and then I had Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Ikebukuro, so I was like a fish in water, or like a hungry stray dog, wandering the maze of the city.

This photobook "TOKYO 1992" is made up of images taken in the midst of the above-mentioned situation. In other words, the two photobooks "Daido hysteric no.4" produced in 1993 and "TOKYO 1992" produced in 2023 were created at different times from the many feelings I had at the time that were difficult to express.

Although the many streets and alleys where the starving dog roamed have changed over time, the city's body odor, desires, and the light and shadows that fall on it have remained almost constant. And the old stray dog, however wobbly he may be, continues to wander the streets with a camera in hand, because "photography" is cool. - Daido Moriyama, afterword
