This is a collection of works by Anne Rearick, a photographer who was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2003 and whose work is held in the collections of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Prior to embarking on her long and acclaimed career, the artist visited Perry County in eastern Kentucky and lived with the Riddle family as a graduate student. This work compiles the photographs she took during that time.
When Rearick met the Liddle family he was immediately welcomed into their everyday family life. Rearick captured candid moments of festivity, intimacy and tradition - from pig hunting to hair braiding, the family cemetery and children at play. Yet these images are resolutely candid and never sentimental. Though Rearick is now best known for his images that value humanity and human love, here we see the origins of his style.
