Quote from SamePaper description
In a typical photo, the photographer always wants the subject to "smile" and captures a moment of temporary happiness. Also, when we encounter difficulties, we tell ourselves to "smile" as if there is no problem and pretend to be calm. However, we realize that the staged positivity of "smiling" does not always solve the problem, and we can no longer lie to ourselves. Especially when each of us is in a miserable situation to a greater or lesser extent, "smile" is not necessarily a joyful expression, but an emotion with contradictory meanings, and sometimes even creepy. The phenomenon of "smile" now has a more complex meaning.
Meanwhile, the economic decline has made it impossible to hide this melancholy even in the glittering and sophisticated commercial visuals. Artists are at a difficult crossroads, balancing their time-consuming creative endeavors with their expensive lifestyles. How do they find creative outlets to escape reality and deal with these difficulties under these economic constraints and limited working conditions? We would like to explore the more fundamental essence of creativity.
In this issue, we introduce stories created by artists and photographers from around the world based on the theme of "Smile," drawing on various perspectives and unique life experiences.
