This is a collection of works by Baltimore-based photographer Steven Cuffie. It features two series of personal works produced between 1976 and 1985 in his Baltimore home, where he spent his entire life as a photographer. His youngest son, Marcus Cuffie, edited the collection and contributed a foreword about his father's legacy. After Cuffie's death, Marcus and his brother discovered the photographs when his sister found boxes full of prints stored in various dressers around the house. As he sorted through the photographs, two themes emerged clearly: women and children, which were the most frequent themes in his early work. The portraits of women were taken during Cuffie's single years, while the photographs of children began to be taken in parallel in the mid-1970s. "Through an expanded conversation about Baltimore and the lives of its people, [Steven's] work deepens our understanding of the city. The subject of blackness evolved rapidly in the 1970s, and these works are part of that lineage. The people in the photographs are not just subjects, but collaborators in telling their stories. The smiles of the children belie the harsh truth of the city, because they know it is only one part of life. The intimate spaces in which the women are portraited feel closed off from any external notion of what it meant to be black at the time. Free from the politics of classification, free from narrative, the people in the photographs are allowed to reveal themselves before the viewer, true to themselves." - Marcus Cuffee
