Sandwich, a creative platform run by Japanese sculptor Kohei Nawa, began its activities in 2009 in Fushimi, Kyoto, based in a renovated sandwich manufacturing factory. This is not only a studio/office where staff members who create works and advance projects gather, but also a laboratory for experimenting with the possibilities of materials, a factory for developing necessary equipment and tools, a hub connecting various workshops involved in the production process, a practical education system connecting students with art sites, and a residence for artists and guests from Japan and abroad. Just as Nawa's field of activity goes far beyond that of a typical sculptor and spans the fields of architecture, interior design, stage art, design, fashion, and dance performance, Sandwich is constantly stimulated by the flow of numerous things, events, and people, and continues to grow and proliferate.
Located in a rural landscape far from the urban area of Kyoto, with the Uji River flowing gently nearby, Kohei Nawa and "Sandwich" have produced countless works. Their activities could never be fully described in one book, but it may be possible to convey a glimpse of the dense time and atmosphere that flows for creativity there. Described and recorded in this book are fragments of the activities of "Sandwich" that have gone beyond the realm of contemporary art and have had an impact on people, cities, society, and ultimately the world.
The book includes contributions by Brett Littman, a museum director, writer, and curator based in New York, who is an old friend of Nawa and knows Sandwich well, Koichiro Osaka, a Japanese independent curator and writer, and Prabda Yoon, an artist who writes and works in various media based in Thailand, as well as an interview with Damien Jalet, a French-Belgian choreographer/dancer with whom Nawa has collaborated for nearly 10 years. The words, which are woven because of the friendship that the four artists have cultivated, unravel the essence of the artist and Sandwich as objects while touching on personal aspects. The book also provides a bird's-eye view of the changes in the artist's activities over the 14 years since 2009, and covers aspects that have not been put into words before, such as the influence that the artist and Sandwich have had on the art scene and their uniqueness both domestically and internationally.
The sun rises, the moon rises, and the sun rises again.
Sandwich's activities are scattered throughout every moment of this monotonous repetition.
If we were to gather them all together and look at them, what kind of day would unfold?
